The Challenges

The challenges facing people with learning disabilities… and the benefits of new media!

People with learning disabilities find it hard to organise their thoughts, they often have difficulties with memory and can find communication and socialising a challenge.  They require effective support in their daily lives to play a fulfilling role in their communities and to participate in wider society.  Multimedia technologies can revolutionise their ability to play a role, to express themselves and to contribute.

New media technology can help to transform the daily lives of people with learning disabilities.  Most of us benefit from the use of digital technologies like mobile phones and computers to make our daily lives easier, but for those with learning disabilities these tools can make the difference between being excluded and taking part – with their peers and in their communities. New media can be used to enable them to live more independently, to build their support networks, to travel, explore different activities and to find suitable employment. These tools can make a significant difference to the capacity for people with learning disabilities to be included.
