The Media Zone 2008

The Rix Centre took part in the media zone at the “Learning Disabilities Today” Exhibition, that took place at the Business Design Centre in Islington on Thursday 27th of November.

The Rix Centre showed how easy is to build a personal website for people with learning disabilities. Volunteers from the attending audience helped to build a website for the Media Zone by using The Rix Centres ‘Easy-build’ web template, uploading text, pictures and videos, you can visit the website we made by clicking here.

On the day, Nick Weldin, Multimedia and Learning Disabilities Specialist from the Rix Centre, showed new ways to explore the internet which we like to call “Symbols Surfing”. Nick said that now  “Surfing the web is made easy for people with learning disabilities  – just pick a card any card and go!”

“Symbol Surfing” was a practical demonstration of how the use of symbols and simple multimedia technology can help people with Learning Disabilities to navigate through websites such as ’Flickr’ and ’Youtube’ and find content that they enjoy. Previous people found that the technology used to surf the web was a barrier. “It can really help those people with the most profound learning difficulties to use the Internet in a more accessible way” Nick explained to the audience. To find out visit The Big Tree blog.

The volunteers involved in the demonstration enjoyed choosing their favourite videos on Youtube, flashing cards with pictures at the screen and navigating through Youtube without any need of using any keyboard or mouse.
