Learning Disability Today: Media Zone

Learning Disability Today, November 27th 2008.

The Rix Centre will be demonstrating some of our new ways to surf the web in the media zone. The slot is called ‘symbol surfing’ and we will be demonstrating accessible software for surfing the web using symbols. The symbols can read by web-cams and programmed to search the web. This offers new and exciting way for people with profound or multiple learning disabilities to access the web by showing the symbol to a web-cam. The symbols can be customised to search the web for whatever is programmed on to the symbol.

We will also be running a cyber café during the day for visitors to see examples of accessible websites created by and for people with learning disabilities. The Rix Centre media champions will be helping during the day to make a website about all the event and what’s happening at the media zone. They will be posting images and video of the day on the site as it happens.

Come and join in the fun, we will be happy to tell you all about the potential opportunities that new media has for people with disabilities.
