METHODS
Methodologies used on this programme include:
- Video ethnography and participant observation of the use of ICTs in learning disability communities, looking at patterns of use, the range of user issues across the sample and the use and non-use of multimedia from both communication, self-advocacy and accessibility perspectives;
- Semi-structured interviews of users and supporters before, during and after use of the VLE , incorporating the use of symbols, photos and 'talking mats' to facilitate communication with those who do not have conventional speech skills;
- The Affective Communication Assessment (Coupe J et al 1985) will be used with those people with profound and multiple learning disabilities at sensori motor level;
- Set task completion and basic computer-log analysis will be used to measure ability and accessibility obstacles in the design of the system and content detail;
- Action research incorporating technobiographical methods to reflect on the product development process within the VLE production team.
